Substitute Lesson Plan

English/Language Arts: This class is a post-Regents Language Arts class designed to be a preparation for post-secondary learning.  In each term, there are usually four major projects that need to be completed either in class and/or as independent studies. During the fall of 2009, the four projects were: 

 

1. Written and Oral Presentation about a

Career of your Choice

 

2. Poetry Interpretation and Analysis:

"How is the Theme of Love Expressed in Poetry

From Around the World?"

 

 3a) "What are the Many Themes of the Broadway Play  " West Side Story?"

 In class reading with essay writing

    b)  "What are the Many Themes of the Broadway Play  "The Miracle Worker?"

 

      4. Graduation Project:  Journals, Poetry, Presentations, Dramatic Readings Related to Graduation

 

                                                                            5.  ""This, I Believe"  Projects: In class or website readings of "This I Believe essays"; 

                                                                                             journal writings in preparation for "This, I Believe" essays;

          worksheets in preparation for these essays; writing and editing and

                rewriting of original "This, I Believe" essays.

In addition, students may create their own individualized, independent projects based upon these themes.

                    Examples include:  Portfolio books with Artistic Illustrations of Poetry, Essays and Journals

                                                 Powerpoint Presentations

                                                 Research Paper on a Selected Topic.

 

Dear Students and Family Members:

                  I wish to welcome you to a joyful, experiential class in Dance Education at YABC@Washington Irving High School.  I hope that you will take away from this class more knowledge and information, greater skills in movement technique, creativity, research and personal expression,  a richer understanding and  appreciation of all the arts, and a positive  feeling of  endeavor, engagement and accomplishment! 

 

    The following should serve as a general guideline for evaluation of your work in this class:

                   60%-70%:  Class attendance and participation 

                   20%-25%:  Writing, Research and Homework Projects;

                   10%-20%   Class trips, Attending performances with school, outside of school and independently

                   10%-20%   Preparing for and participating in culminating project.

 

            Please initial the following statements to help foster achievement of these goals:

            __I will attend class regularly and will only be absent in the case of illness or the occurrence of a  personal/ family situation  requiring my immediate attention.

            __I will  participate in the class activities and make choices which will interest and engage me.

            __I will complete the journals, homework  and research assignments on time.

 

            __I will work cooperatively with my fellow classmates to bring and share my own experiences and background to this work.

            __I will attend trips according to my schedule.

Introduction to Dance:  This is an Introductory Survey Course in Dance with four Dance themes:  

                                         1.  Dance as a Means of Maintaining Health and Wellness 

                                         2.  Dance as an Art form     

                                         3.  Dance as a part of Culture

                                         4.  Workshop in Choreography

This is a participatory class and attendance is extremely important. To supplement attendance in class,

there are journal writings in health and dance and research reports about dances of selected cultures and biographies of dancers and choreographers. 

 

In addition, students may create independent studies  in dance with such projects as:

     a) viewing live dance performances, researching reviews of these performances and writing their own.

     b) creating  artistic illustrated portfolio books using the journal and research reports as a base

     c) creating an original piece of choreography 

The New York City Ballet Workout, a ballet-based fitness program, is the basis of the experience in dance technique for the students.

 

Choreography class:  This is a student-driven class in which individual students "Take the Lead" to create original choreographic works in a variety of styles and techniques.  The final project for this class ends in performance.  For theSpring 2010 term, the performance will be done at the June 2010 Town Hall. 

                          During the Spring of 2010, the three dance genres that were explored :

                                                  1. Folkdance from Panama (tipico.)

                                                  2. Ballet

                                                  3. Creative movement and Hip-hop.

                                                  

         In addition, the same writing and research projects of the modern dance class were assigned.
